Course Description:

Would you like to manage a band, run a business or work freelance in the music industry? The 18 month Diploma of Music Business is a great way for those passionate about music to gain skills needed to work in the industry by giving you the opportunity to gain skills to work in or run a small business in the music industry.

To work successfully in the music industry you need to know about all aspects of music business. Understanding music is not enough! This nationally accredited program will give you the skills to be savvy in the music business world. The course acts as an incubator for students to gain practical experience in working in a music business environment consisting of real industry situations and tasks.

In the first 12 months students will learn a range of skills that encompass the theory and practice of work in the music industry and then gain hands on practical experience assisting with the management of the student business Urchin Entertainment, in a series of real life scenarios and tasks. Students will experience basic business skills, copyright and contract information, music promotion, blogging, web maintenance, event management and much more.

In the following 6 months students will experience important practical skills in project management, artist management, digital delivery of music, marketing and publicity, copyright, law and will manage teams of music and assistant music business students. You will learn to be creative, informed and connected as a music business professional and will be responsible for the management of the class business Urchin Entertainment.

All students will be given access to digital learning tools such as a class forum board to assist their learning and networking, class business website to practice web skills and a cutting edge ePortfolio tool which will be used in career planning and management of a personal portfolio of work.

Students wishing to undertake the Diploma of Music Business must have extensive industry experience or undertake and successfully complete the dual Certificate III/IV in Music Business which is embedded into the Diploma.

Course Duration: 18 months for those who need to first complete the Certificate III/IV in Music Business (see Entry Requirements below). 6 months for those with extensive vocational experience or who hold a prior qualification.

Study Mode: Full time.

Campus: Mt Gravatt – 1030 Cavendish Rd, Mt Gravatt

Career Opportunities: Independent record label manager, licensing manager, music merchandiser, music promoter, music publisher, music/artist manager, independent musician/artist, booking agent, event manager, venue manager, small business owner.

Course costs: Fees include tuition and textbooks. Students must successfully complete Certificate III/IV before continuing on to Diploma and can exit at the end of Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma.

First 12 months – Certificate III/IV: Full fee – $2220.00, Concession – $1520.00

Following 6 months: Diploma: Full fee – $1550.00, Concession – $900.00

All fees approximate – subject to changes in material and tuition costs. Students can apply for a payment plan.

Entry Requirements: Candidates may enter the qualification through a number of entry points which demonstrate their potential to undertake vocational education and training at Diploma level, including (but not restricted to):

•            successful achievement of a Certificate IV qualification in marketing or business management, e.g. CUS40309 Certificate IV in Music Business, BSB40207 Certificate IV in Business and BSB41307 Certificate IV in Marketing

•            extensive vocational experience in marketing or business management

•            extensive vocational experience in music industry administration.

Candidates must complete an application process to gain entry into the qualification.

Students under 17 years of age must meet enrolment requirements as specified in the Education (General Provisions Act) 2006.

Program Articulation: Students who have successfully achieved a Certificate IV in Music Business may continue on to the Diploma of Music Business.  Students who have successfully achieved a Diploma of Music Business may continue on to the Advanced Diploma of Music Business which will be offered at MSIT in the near future (subject to registration).

Students who have successfully completed a Certificate IV or Diploma of Music may enrol in the Diploma of Music Business and will be eligible for Credit Transfer for selected units.
